I'm a year older than you and all of this rings true except the programming part. My boredom was relieved through Sci-Fi fantasy books. I was, however, the one who learned the new automated systems at my first job and taught them to the older workers. Relief for me in that the old way was so time consuming, painful for them because change is hard.
Forgot to add: I was also inhaling sci-fi, fantasy, and horror novels by the stack, and anything about outer space or dinosaurs had my full attention before the cover was even open. Whole childhood was spent somewhere other than here. Different planet, different epoch, occasionally different dimension.
