I felt this begin to happen during Regan as I watched students lose their ethics in the college town where I live. They ditched their parents' old cars, their blue jeans and generic thrift store clothes and got new BMWs, giant gold sunglasses and shoulder pads. It was okay to be a pig again. The lessons we learned and lived in the 70's seemed to vanish for the newly "of age". The rest of us held on as long as we could until prices pushed us out of the cheap, yet substandard digs that allowed us a little freedom into soulless jobs. Gentrification. I'm 63 this year and I hate that I've been right about where we were headed. Greed and stupidity won. I can barely watch a movie that's not in a foreign language. For the rest of my life I plan to check out of this cage of coked up savages for as long as I possible can.
We will never completely repair the damage that this administration has caused, but we can arrest it, somewhat, if we flip the legislature in November. If the current administration maintains control of the house and senate after the November election, our nation will slip into a darkness that I fear only open rebellion will reverse.
The answer remains the same, revolution, it isn't my fault that a country born in revolution, has spent the greater part of the last 200 years getting fat and comfortable, and has evidently lost the will to stand up for itself in a way that tells it leaders who to fear, rather than the other way around. I only know that when the people fear the government, tyranny has arrived, and it's gonna stay as long as it's allowed to stay, cause it requires the consent of the governed, as it were.
What happened in Michigan should have been the jumping off point, but people keep going back to pretending all of this shit is temporary, and will be going "back to normal" sometime in the near future, it won't, this IS the new "normal", and by waiting, they're allowing themselves to be conditioned to it. The answer has always been revolutionary change, we're gonna have to make those changes ourselves.
I suspect the solution lies in community, or begins there, it's pretty clear we can no longer rely on the government, so we'll have to rely on each other. If we do it the right way, we can build something durable that supercedes this government. Ultimately, we ARE the cogs that make this machine run, so if we stop selling our labor the them by the hour, and begin donating it to ourselves, this government eventually becomes irrelevant, it's just getting enough people on that page that's the hard part.
