There is a question that gets asked a lot about the Republican Party, and it deserves a serious answer.
The question is: how does an extremely stupid man with no ideology, no stable policy convictions, and no personal warmth toward the people who serve him command the kind of loyalty that bends senators, silences law firms, extracts settlements from billion-dollar media companies, and turns former critics into enthusiastic surrogates within a single news cycle? How does Ted Cruz go from “pathological liar” to rally-warm endorser? How does Bill Barr go from testifying that the stolen-election claims were, in his own word, bullshit, to endorsing the man who made those claims? How does a party that knows exactly what it is looking at choose, over and over, to look away?
