Let us begin with what the plane is not.
It is not Air Force One. Air Force One is any aircraft carrying the president, so technically any airplane he sits in becomes Air Force One the moment his body enters it, in the way that a man walking into a church does not become a bishop but a plane carrying a president does become the flagship of the free world, which is either the most efficient promotion in American governance or the most dangerous, depending on the plane.
The plane in question is a Boeing 747-8 donated by the royal family of Qatar to the United States government in 2025, which is a sentence that should require a second reading, and then a third, and then a quiet lie-down. A foreign monarchy gave the American head of state a personal jet. The president accepted it on the stated grounds that only a stupid person would refuse a free airplane, which is the kind of remark a man makes when he has never once in his life been offered anything by anyone who did not want something back.
The gift required $400 million in taxpayer money to retrofit, which makes the free airplane a $400 million airplane. That is not a paradox. That is simply what free means now.
What the $400 million bought
It bought a plane that experts say cannot fly the president safely near a war zone.
The specifics are classified, which is convenient, but the outlines are public. The original Air Force One aircraft, the two 747-200Bs that have carried presidents since the end of the Cold War, are hardened against nuclear blast. They carry anti-missile countermeasures. They have an onboard operating room. They have communications systems designed to let a president command the military while the world is on fire. They were built for exactly one purpose, which was to be the last surviving element of the American chain of command in the worst hour a country can have.
The Qatari plane has a bigger bathroom.
An aviation analyst told the Associated Press that the absence of visible countermeasure systems and the smaller number of antennas suggested the plane was better suited to domestic use. Domestic use. The president’s international jet is rated for trips within a country that has no hostile neighbors. It is a very expensive way to get to Ohio.
The Turkey incident
In July, the president flew to a NATO summit in Ankara on the Qatari plane.
He flew home on a different one.
The Secret Service urged the switch after intelligence indicated a potential Iranian threat. In plain terms, the president of the United States was told, by the people whose sole job is keeping him alive, that the plane he had arrived in could not be trusted to carry him out of a region where the United States was actively bombing things. He was moved to the old plane. The Qatari jet was flown separately to an American base in England, where the president explained it was going so that service members could tour it, in what he called a short trip.
He later denied that security had anything to do with the swap. He then added, in the same breath, that the life of a president is very dangerous, that he was number one on Iran’s kill list, and that the plane would be pulled from service to get maxed out with upgrades.
Two months later, the plane has not been pulled from service. The White House has no timeline for the upgrades. Reporting suggests the work may not begin until after the midterms.
Ireland
Next week the president will fly to Ireland aboard the Qatari plane.
He has meetings in Dublin with the Irish president and prime minister. He then has a stop at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, for the Irish Open, a professional golf tournament that is being held at a property he owns, that he will attend as the president of the United States, having arrived on a jet gifted by a foreign monarchy and retrofitted at public expense, that his own security detail told him not to fly during a period of heightened threat.
Ireland is not near Iran. That is the reasoning. A White House official explained to the Post that the plane is still considered safe for domestic travel and travel to Europe. Europe is safe. The Atlantic is safe. Iranian missiles, one assumes, do not reach County Clare.
The Atlantic Ocean, incidentally, is where Air Force One would be at the moment it became most useful, which is the moment something catastrophic happened over water while the president was aboard. That is the exact scenario the old planes were built for. That is the scenario the Qatari plane cannot handle. That is the trip he has chosen.
What the plane is for
The plane is not for getting the president from one place to another. There are planes for that. There have been planes for that since the presidency was an office, and the government owns two of them, and they are old, and they work, and one of them flew him home from Turkey when it mattered.
The plane is for being a plane that was given to him.
It exists so that a man who has spent his whole life collecting things people gave him can add a jumbo jet to the collection, and can fly it to his own golf course in a foreign country, and can step off it in front of cameras, and can be photographed disembarking from a thing he got for free, on his way to a tournament at a resort he owns, while the two aircraft built to keep him alive in the worst hour a country can have sit on a tarmac at Andrews, paid for, maintained, ready, and unused because they are not the gift.
The Irish Open runs next week. The plane has no countermeasures. The Secret Service has already pulled him off it once. Nobody has set a date for the fix.
He is going anyway. Of course he is going anyway. He was given a plane.

Well….anything can happen…😉
I will look forward to seeing the "welcome" he gets in Ireland; "The Ancient Place of Hospitality"!
And yes, the suppositions surrounding this little "excursion" are a novelist's dream!
