A Democratic Congress can subpoena, refuse money, and stop confirmations; it cannot convict, legislate over a veto, or end a war by resolution. Here is what 1986, 2006, and 2018 say comes next.
Yep, back in 1789, the transfer was set for March 4th because horse-drawn transportation, mid-December Electoral College voting, and paper mail delivery made travel extremely slow. Then the 20th Amendment became effective in 1937, and Inauguration Day moved up to January 20th to shorten the wait.
Anyway, in parliamentary systems like the UK, ministers are generally chosen from sitting lawmakers, so it can happen pretty quickly. The idea of the long wait in the U.S. is that an incoming president must vet and nominate thousands of political appointees, department heads, and cabinet members who require Senate confirmation—unless you're Donald Trump and just pick the last people you saw on TV.
The transition supposedly allows time to draft budgets, security briefings, and policy plans before taking control of a massive federal bureaucracy. Unless, once again you're Donald Trump, and you get your budget by killing off social safety nets, firing most of the competent federal workforce, and leeching funds from "woke" departments to fund your newly-invented ones. You wouldn't know your security briefing from your maturity fleeting and you have no policy plans other than staying out of prison and grifting as much from the economy as you possibly can before you gobble your last Chicky Nuggie and join the choir invisible.
Seemingly, the UK turns over the PM every 6-9 months or so. It's the new Italy. When an election is called before the term is up in the UK, it's because there is doubt that the reigning PM has the support of his party.
Yes, people weren’t professional politicians. They had farms and businesses to run. Family obligations. Took longer to travel to and from DC. Just like electoral college is antiquated, I think this waiting period is also. But these rules and regulations will not change. Just like term limits will never happen, the status quo benefits those in power. Won’t be changed, UNLESS there is a way to motivate the third of the political that doesn’t vote, to get engaged. Not sure what that would take!
Bill, nobody here is upset about being in the minority. Gareth asked why the US waits and Nancy asked how it started. Transition time is a fair point, though. Bush v. Gore got settled in December 2000 and Bush still took office on schedule. "Get over it" isn't a rebuttal.
Dude. specified in the constitution, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which it was the largest democracy, geographically, in history. The constitution specified 20 March, to allow for the difficulties of collecting and counting the votes, and to enable a smooth turnover of power. After the debacle of 1933, the Roosevelt administration determined it needed to be shorter, and got a constitutional amendment passed which changed it to Jan 20. Even so, from a practical perspective, every new administration has needed the 2 months to build some semblance of effective governance..and that's not likely to change anytime soon. Along with needing a constitutional amendment to change it.
The Constitution never set March 4. The Confederation Congress picked it for 1789. And FDR didn't pass the 20th Amendment. Norris pushed it, Congress sent it in 1932 under Hoover, ratified Jan 1933 before FDR took office. March 20? Bro, check a calendar.
I think the key difference is senate confirmation, which in turn is driven by direct election of the chief executive. So many officials have to be confirmed by the senate and that takes time. The reason they have to be confirmed is that it's a check on the power of a president. (Doesn't work so well if the senate is terrified of the president.) In most Anglosphere countries the executive ("government") is chosen by the legislature ("parliament"), the parliament acts as a check on the executive and so they don't feel they need parliament to have an extra direct check on ministers. So appointing officials is very fast and in the form of a shadow ministry they are chosen well before the election. In those countries going to the people not knowing who your ministers will be if elected would be considered underprepared and would make you unelectable.
Two words, zero arguments. The piece cites 1973, 1986, 2006 and 2018 with dates and names. Pick one thing you think is wrong and say why. If "stupid" is the best you've got after 2,000 words, I'm not the one this comment makes look bad.
AND THEN THERE IS THIS …, in America, the people speak, it is a BLUE WAVE, and they give Trump 800 more days to finish his term instead of putting him jail for all the crimes he has committed. How CRAZY is that? LOCK HIM UP. SO GLAD TO BE CANADIAN. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
May I propose to add one more point: law is 1 thing, deliberately misinforming the public quite another - and Trump has access to unfiltered megaphones the Democrats lack. Expect propaganda to distort reality in the upcoming years.
Based on the October 5th statement T**mp made re: "Iran can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles or San Diego. This is a very small price to pay."
Here is what I *THINK*:
Iran does not have the nuclear missile capability to launch anything past 1250 miles.
They'd need to send one 7500 miles in order to hit Los Angeles and/or San Diego.
This man is beyond ANY mental ability to function as a typical human being.
Barring a world disaster before 11/03/2026,
I'd say every Eligible Voter in this country MUST vote BLUE in the Midterms.
We can make up scenarios and/or "hope" for someone to STOP him outside the White House and Congress...but that's not gonna happen either.
My opinion, based on what he said previously: is that HE Will launch a nuke on San Diego and LA, and BLAME IT ON IRAN!
I HOPE TF I'm Wrong!
Otherwise, Stay tuned to what's happening now.
We needn't "wish" and/or "hope" that the Midterms will result in Our favor and not his....
The options we had in 2024 were not ideal. You call Harris a dummy—an opinion formed by propaganda. She wasn’t always as quick with an answer as many, but she was clearly far more intelligent than Trump. Most importantly, she was a psychologically stable person. None of what has happened—killing American citizens, the kindergarten art project at the White House, wasted time and money over pointless projects, extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean, starting a war over a make believe imminent nuclear threat, tariffs, turning neighbors and allies into enemies, fawning over dictators, the growing tech oligarchy, the corruption, the abandonment of Ukraine in favor of Russia, and all the daily embarrassing, stupid nonsense—would have happened had she won.
Obviously other things could and would have happened, but with the knowable, she was the better choice.
I never called Harris a "dummy" or any other nasty name!
I seriously wanted her to win because she was an Excellent Prosecutor and was California's Attorney General for at least one of the Governor's terms, if not both.
If Biden had acted sooner and didn't hesitate, she might've gotten ahead of much of Trump's BS.
I thought, during the debate between her and numb-nuts, that she was going to laugh herself silly when he said, "They're eating the cats! They're eating the dogs! "They're eating the pets!!"
Just like his mockery of the disabled reporter should've been the end of his campaign the first time, I thought the "They're eating the pets" mania should've ended his 2nd time...but it didn't.
That doesn't say anything bad about VP Kamala Harris.
It speaks to the kind of people that have believed what he says for more than 10 years. Why?
MAGA's love him because he hates the people they hate and they're low-minded just like him...whether he's manipulating them on purpose or not, It doesn't matter.
Besides, is it Not true the Elon Musk had a great deal to do with T**mp's win anyway?
My understanding is that Musk gave him $158 million immediately and then made sure the voting process was tampered with.
I have no proof of that, but how many MAGA's have said they believe if it wasn't for Putin and Musk, T**mp would've never had a chance?
Probably All of them.
Attacking the democrats for the mistakes they make governing, is a piss poor measurement of what is Obvious to me.
This country has been openly and secretly Racist and Separatist for decades, maybe even centuries! Nothing and no one is going to fix that anytime soon.
It would be pretty damn hard for him to launch a rocket from the White House and not get caught doing it. Having said that, if he tries he is history. Not only would he be arrested, charged, and convicted, but the first American president to be publicly executed.
All excellent and true observations and concerns. Most Americans have no clue how far down the road to disaster we have already traveled. And we could have stopped him many miles ago, but we’ve given this administration all the time it has needed to become impenetrable.
Given that, with all our noise and dismay, since we did not stick our necks out and go after the problems when the risks from this administration were less, are we going to answer the call to save our country when the risks are so much higher? We’ve seen what happens when people have attempted to intervene during ICE’s brutal practices, especially against children. We’ve now seen American citizens who did not show any aggression get murdered by ICE. We know ICE is Trump’s personal enforcement and protection agency. We know Trump is generous with his forces of protection.
Will we show the world true courage when it’s needed?
Trump has codes to confirm a launch, but no way to designate the target without someone in the US strategic command "programming" the missiles. The "football" isn't a targeting system, it's a fail-safe system to prevent unauthorised launches. The firing solutions on the ICBMs are pre designated by strategic command. All the pres does is confirm or not confirm the decision to launch.
What you are saying is people in the US military who maintain the nuclear strike capability would agree to send a missile to LA or San Diego? That's mental - even the most die hard Trump supporter in the military wouldn't agree to that.
He said US cities will not face destruction from a nuclear Iran. Nuking the west coast. You have to listen to his entire speech as he said that. Tr I mp bounces all over the board, not easy to follow at times. But he never said for Iran to nuke LA or SF…..those are lies from the fake media!
It’s on video. “Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego,” Grand Island, Nebraska, crowd cheering. Not SF, by the way. Even the White House’s defense is “he meant a nuclear Iran,” not “he never said it.” My post quoted him word for word.
Christ - as the Son of God - did not believe you should bear false witness. God the Father set that forth in a list that confirms his status as the ONLY true God, whom all should obey. In other words, as a follower of Christ: Don’t lie.
Denis, how about being concerned with how often the President says “stupid” stuff, so stupid it can easily be construed as being even more stupid than it actually is. That’s the threat—our leader is so intellectually deficient that stupid statements he makes every day cause confusion amongst allies, rile markets, feed the appetites of violent people, and hint at alignment with evil dictators.
These aren’t occasional flubs that could be ignored. It’s a daily pattern that points to conditions we should all be concerned about.
You went from "stop catastrophizing" to calling Harris a slur in two comments, which is a hell of an argument for your own calm judgment. "The other side was bad" doesn’t answer Shifted’s point. Your guy says stupid stuff hourly, and you’re defending it by swearing at 2024.
Denis, you don't matter. In two weeks people who do matter are going to vote. All of them this time.
The votes will be counted (because every single one of them matter). Many congress people and senators will be sent home. The new congress will be much more progressive because even elected officials can counted on to be practical.
They will impeach and remove the shit stain that we idiot Americans invited to abuse us by not voting enough these past ten years (forever really).
That stain will be scrubbed off and you will find a new asshole to grovel for. Am I getting warm? You better believe it.
As much as I 100% agree with your analogy and prediction "The votes will be counted (because every single one of them matter).", I have to remind you that you left out the potential for Muskrat to put his "trillionaire thumb" on the voting process scale and interfere with the final tally just like he probably did (Trump said so and so did Musk's rebel daughter) during 2024's election.
It's really not a secret anymore is it?
Musk rigged the 2024 election through his tampering with many of the computer assisted voting processes.
Maybe the only thing "we" lack is physical Proof and an UNBIASED Federal Investigative team's conclusions.
And THOSE are the reasons that will NEVER occur..not even in This century...in my opinion.
The removal fantasy was Concerned Citizen’s, not mine, and my piece says flat out there will be no 67 votes. You're arguing with the dumbest version of the other side because it's easier. Meanwhile your defense of the president is "Congress sucks worse."
A tiger has no badge and no use-of-force policy. Per bystander video, Pretti never drew a weapon and was filming on his phone. Good was in a car. Comparing them to a guy who climbed into a cage is a lousy analogy, and you know it.
Thank you for the concise prognostications based on historical events. The major fly in the ointment is the techbro $$$$ factor that wasn't around before. fElon will try his worst to fuck things over, along with fuckerberg, etal. Bozos will use his media acquisitions, as will Ellison, so these wildcards don't appear to be factored into this forecast, unless something was overlooked? Otherwise, well done! and a huge thanks.
Wow, a SS post that isn’t completely whack job, wing nut, extremist - on either side. Just good old fashioned, balanced, logical, historically assisted work. Thanks Tom — although I haven’t read the 100 comments as I’m sure the lunatics on either side are in full flamethrower mode … but heck you (and I) can just block them :)
Depressing, and analytically convincing. One wild card here is that there has never been a president who is such a buffoon and so deranged. Maybe that can break some of these patterns. It all may depend on the public, which in turn all depends on the media — how will the relative influence of legacy media, fascist media, and new media shake out?
But I wouldn’t be surprised if all of these predictions bear out exactly as written.
One thing not mentioned (related) is the possibility of Texas having a Democrat governor. That would really move the needle and help build some momentum.
Dems are capitalist; MAGAts are fascist (a degenerate form of capitalism). Why else would Jeffries have made a trip to the White House to visit with Kushner? I really think the seeds of this go back to Iran-Contra and the fact that Reagan was not impeached, tried and convicted for abuse of power. Flash forward to Bush-era torture and Obama's exhortation to "look forward, not backward.' The moral rot has been going on for nigh 40 years.
I haven’t read your article yet, but I have no faith in Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries to do anything but write sternly worded letters to the DoJ. Nothing will hsppen.
When you read the article you will find out why the Dems won’t be able to do much. It all really depends on the voters of this country understanding that to make the midterms mean anything they have to give the Senate a veto proof majority. Asking Americans to understand their own system and act on it is a big ask. But then asking them to understand ANYTHING is a big ask.
🇬🇧 Gary: Interjecting here with some trepidation...
With my limited experience of teaching Americans here in the UK, and also listening to many interviews and conversations with a range of mostly non-college people, I must sadly agree with your last two sentences. Basic education in the US appears to be a tad below par.
This is not going to be a leadership issue. A LBJ/Pelosi duo would be just as hogtied by our form of government. No need to take a gratuitous shot at Schumer/Jefferies! Jefferies is going to get significant legislation to the Senate. And nobody will know. That is not Jefferies fault. And unless Dems kill the filibuster, which will be stopped by Senators NOT named Schumer, those bills will land like trees in a forest with nobody there.
I like everything you’re saying. Problem is, we keep bringing a policy to a gun fight! As much as I hate to say it, we need to create our own rules should we win both houses! Stay within the law of course-and the constitution—but push the HELL out of those boundaries and take on their attitude of “what’re you gonna do to stop me?” We continue to sit quietly and quote the law while our opponents are UNIFIED in the exact same very LOUD message and play the long game. You can’t play “Clue” by Monopoly’s rules!
We need to study up on “The Art of War” and what it actually MEANS to “ take off the gloves!”
As a PNW girl, I always hoped the PAC 12 could beat the SEC with our “air raid” offenses. Problem was, the SEC played SMASH MOUTH and played it very well!
Wake up Dems! Get, and stick to a plan. Define and stick to a long game: that’s called vision!
Define and be unified in the message. A K.I.S.S. message: “ Keep it Simple Stupid! Deliver it LOUD!
Take off the gloves and not only beat them at their own game- but redefine rules the way we and the Constitution sees the damn LAW!
It seems bonkers that a new administration has to wait until January to take over. In the UK it is the day after the election
Use to be March before newly elected officials took office. Could be worse!

California will still be counting votes in January.
Eat a dickkk Bob.
It’s such an interesting subject don’t you think? I mean, I hate that the Dems keep making me think about it….or do I?
They’re not. That’s just another Republican lie.
you were wrong
Just the same as being fired. You are escorted out of the building that day
It’s bonkers the people rely on the 1% and don’t do shit but bich about things

He has the nuclear codes and is capable of "ordering" those missiles to be launched.
#2 Who will arrest him, if he DOES give permission to launch??
The DoJ? The Congress? The Supreme Court?

Typical MAGAt cruelty: answer a question a question. Are you going to tell the families of Renee Good and Alex Pretti that their :"hair is on fire"?
So..I’m “mental” or Trump’s people are “mental”??
Well-thought-out and interesting.
The media are a big wild card.
Maybe he’ll die in the meantime …
hope hope hope
One thing not mentioned (related) is the possibility of Texas having a Democrat governor. That would really move the needle and help build some momentum.
Don't rule out Divine Intervention. Trump chokes to death on Big Mac!
Nothing happens. An insurrectionist was not held to account and returned to office. The Dems are complicit
They didn’t understand or seemed to forget that Trump tried to overthrow the government after the 2020 election. So yeah.
Just a tad…
Let’s GOOOOOOO!
I don't want to become what I hate. If we do that, what's the difference between them and us? Partisan policy disputes?
I am tired of Democrats leading with what they can’t do.
Disheartening, depressing piece, but oh so realistic, well-argued, and clear-eyed. We are not out of the woods yet.
Well, that was depressing…
Pretty depressing piece. So basically the whole planet is stuck with the orange turd aka the mango Mussolini until at least Jan 2029?
Except for the silly slurs, you are correct.
