Let us begin with the phone calls.
Throughout the 1970s, the 1980s, and into the 1990s, reporters at New York newspapers and television stations would receive calls from a publicist at the Trump Organization who identified himself as John Barron, and who wished to share some information about Donald Trump.
Barron was extremely well informed. He knew what Trump was building, what he was worth, and who was calling him. He was in possession of remarkable detail about Trump’s romantic life, including which actresses had reached out and what they had worn. He spoke in a distinctive cadence that several reporters found familiar, and he was, according to the Washington Post’s reporting and to former executives of the company, Donald Trump.
This was an open secret. It was, according to the Post editor Marc Fisher, a running joke on New York news desks, where the arrival of a call from Trump’s own PR office pretending not to be Trump was a recognized event.
The logistics are what the joke skates past. A man in an office picks up a telephone, dials a reporter, adopts a name that is not his, and then, in the voice of a stranger, describes himself admiringly in the third person. He does this for roughly two decades. He does it well enough to be quoted in print and badly enough to be recognized every time, which suggests that being recognized was not the primary risk he was managing.
The catalogue
Barron was the favorite, and there were others.
There was John Miller, who in 1991 gave a fourteen-minute telephone interview to a reporter at People magazine named Sue Carswell about the collapse of Trump’s marriage to Ivana. Miller was generous about his client. He explained that women called constantly, that Trump had a wide field available to him, and he supplied a story about Madonna arriving at the Plaza in an evening gown and combat boots. Carswell recognized the voice during the call. Asked about the tape decades later she said it was absolutely Donald Trump, and said she had no doubt.
There was a letter to New York magazine in 1992 signed by a secretary named Carolin Gallego.
There was David Dennison, the name used for Trump in the nondisclosure agreement with Stormy Daniels.
And on February 22, 2026, during a C-SPAN call-in segment about a Supreme Court decision that had gone against the administration, a caller identifying himself as John Barron, a Republican from Virginia, was given the air. He expressed his displeasure with the ruling, insulted several Democrats by name, and was cut off. Nobody has established who it was.
The part that ends the argument
In 1990, in a court proceeding, Trump was placed under oath and asked whether he had used the name.
He said he believed that on occasion he had used it. Newsday reported it that July, noting the peculiarity of a man who spends millions of dollars advertising his own name acknowledging that he had also been operating under a different one.
He stopped using Barron after that, which is the behavior of a person who understood exactly what he had been doing and had preferred that it stay unestablished.
Twenty-six years later, on the Today show, presented with the Miller recording, he said it was not him, and that it did not sound like him, and that it was not him. He had testified to the opposite under oath and the testimony was a matter of public record and had been reported at the time.
The son
In 2006 he named a child Barron.
Not a building. Not a golf course, not a vodka, not a steak, not a university, not a magazine cover, not an airline, not a board game. A son.
The invented man, conjured to say admiring things about Donald Trump because Donald Trump saying them personally would have carried less weight, was given a boy to carry the name forward. Whatever process produced that decision, it was not one in which anybody in the room said out loud where the name came from, with the specific confidence of a family that has decided some questions are not asked.
What the file actually shows
This section needs to be exact, because the tempting conclusion is available to anyone and it is the wrong one.
The tempting conclusion is that this is a man who hates himself. I cannot establish that and neither can you. It is a claim about an interior state, it would require a clinical examination that will never occur, and it happens also to be exculpatory, which is a strange thing to hand someone.
What the record establishes is narrower and odder.
For fifty years this man has been unable to be his own source. The praise had to arrive from outside, and when no outside would supply it in sufficient volume, he manufactured one and performed it himself, over the telephone, in a voice. He was not seeking admiration, exactly. Admiration he had, in quantity, from tabloids that printed whatever he said. He was seeking third-party admiration, which is a different commodity, and he wanted it badly enough to spend two decades committing a small daily fraud that everyone saw through.
The word for what the actual man was, in that arrangement, is insufficient. Insufficient as a source. The thing that had to be added was not fame or money or property. It was somebody else’s mouth.
And now the nouns
The habit has not gone anywhere. It has been given a government.
In January 2025 he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico. On August 27 of this year he signed another one renaming Lake Ontario, directing the Interior Department to strike the old name from the federal database within thirty days. The Department of Defense has been renamed the Department of War. There is a hallway in the White House where his predecessor’s portrait has been replaced with a photograph of an autopen, flanked on both sides by portraits of himself, with bronze plaques underneath that he dictated personally.
None of that changes anything. The lake is called Lake Ontario in every country including this one outside a single federal database. The Gulf of Mexico is the Gulf of Mexico. The war department fights the same wars under the older name.
The operation is identical to the one on the telephone. A thing exists and is unsatisfactory. The thing itself cannot be altered, or altering it would require work of a kind he has never done. So the name is changed, and the changed name is asserted with total confidence, and the assertion is repeated until people around him begin using it, and the underlying object goes right on being what it was.
He did it to himself for fifty years. He is now doing it to the map.
The difference is that when a man renames himself, the cost is borne by the man. The Interior Department has thirty days.
