in the party’s name was anything other than Nazi propaganda. Grok answered within the hour: “Nazis added ‘socialist’ to their name as propaganda to lure workers from actual leftist parties.” It went on that Hitler rejected Marxism, banned unions, jailed socialists and communists, and “killed his own party’s left wing in 1934,” and that “Mainstream historians place Nazism on the far right.” A second user asked it why its owner was spreading the claim. Grok cited Kershaw, Evans, Britannica and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and added a sentence that deserves to outlive the week: “No owner dictates facts.”

What was true underneath. The name. The German Workers’ Party added “National Socialist” in 1920 to compete with the Social Democrats and the Communists for the same factory floors, and then spent the next thirteen years destroying both. On May 2, 1933, the SA occupied every trade union office in the country, and the unions were dissolved the following day. The first prisoners marched into Dachau in March 1933 were Communists and Social Democrats. On June 30, 1934, Gregor Strasser, the leader of the party’s anti-capitalist wing, was shot through the window of his cell during the purge that also killed Röhm. Otto Strasser had been expelled four years earlier for taking the word socialist seriously. The name survived because it was never a description, which is the point Grok made in fewer words, to its owner, on his own product.

Subscribe now

claim, from Wednesday morning onward: Elon Musk turned off Starlink for the Ukrainian military while Russia was hitting Kyiv’s power plants. Some versions had him “pulling the plug,” most had the word “shut,” and a lot of them tied it to the Russian diesel deal the president had announced the week before.

What happened when it was checked. Two words are wrong, and they’re the two that matter. The first is “shut.” Nothing was turned off. On the night of October 13, Starshield, the military package built on Starlink and paid for by the Pentagon, stopped connecting for any terminal moving faster than 100 miles an hour. Below that, it worked, with glitches. Zelensky corrected the internet himself on Thursday: “Starlink wasn’t turned off,” he wrote on X, “its speed was reduced.” The cap hit exactly one thing, the interceptor and strike drones that fly faster than 100 miles an hour, which is to say the drones Ukraine uses against Russia’s jet-powered Shaheds.

The second wrong word is “Musk.” He said on X that the limits on Starshield “are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS,” which everyone read as a dodge. Then Reuters reported, from two US officials and a Western one, that the order came from inside the White House and the Pentagon was told to carry it out. A senior official’s only correction was that it hadn’t come from the president personally. The president’s own account: “It wasn’t me, and I don’t think it was Elon.” Axios had US officials calling it a “technical malfunction.” Those three explanations can’t all be true, and the one with named sources is Reuters.

What was true underneath. The cap is still on. Service was reported “restored” Thursday, and what came back was the connection below 100 miles an hour. Zelensky said Saturday the limit remains, called it a “planned operation,” and described the test his people ran: they drove terminals across the border into the EU, and the cap lifted at the line. Thom Tillis has asked the Pentagon’s inspector general to find out whether it was “a conscious decision to clear the field for a Russian attack.” So the corrected sentence reads: the White House capped Ukraine’s drone defenses the night Russia fired 39 ballistic missiles at Kyiv, nobody will say who signed it, and it’s still capped. The version that traveled had the wrong man doing a thing that didn’t happen. The real version has the wrong building doing a thing that’s still going on.

Subscribe now

Some versions had him “inviting” the attack, some had him “begging” for it, and the word nuke was in most of them. A reader of this publication asked on Tuesday morning whether it was real, because it did not sound like a thing a president could say and still be president on Wednesday.

What happened when it was checked. The transcript, from ABC7 and matching CNN and Mediaite, is of the Grand Island, Nebraska, rally on Monday, in the section about the cost of the war. The president said gas prices were “just artificial” and “a little bit high,” and then “a small price to pay for keeping the world safe.” Then: “They can take out a city.” “Let them take out Los Angeles.” “Let them take out San Diego.” “This is a very small price to pay.” The crowd applauded at the names.

So the quote is real, and the two cities are real, and the applause is real. What is missing is the word nuke, which he did not say, and the address, because he was not speaking to Iran. He was making an argument to a Nebraska crowd that a high gas price is cheap insurance against a hostile power that “can take out a city,” and he reached for two California cities as examples of what could be taken. The grammar is the grammar of a hypothetical. The sound in the room was the sound of an imperative, which is why the governor of California and both senators and the mayors of both cities heard it the way the crowd did.

What was true underneath. Two things. First, the capability he described does not exist: Iran’s longest-range missiles reach about 2,000 kilometers, Los Angeles is about 12,000 from Tehran, and no intelligence service credits Iran with a nuclear weapon or anything that reaches this hemisphere. The hypothetical was built on a threat the president’s own war is supposed to have ended. Second, and this is the one to keep, a president named two American cities as the ones an enemy could take out, called their loss a small price, and got a cheer for it, in a week when San Diego’s own carrier was coming home from that war. The nuke was added by the internet. The rest he supplied himself.

Subscribe now

This week's are simpler and in some ways worse, because every one of them rests on a recording. A defense secretary's speech was transcribed. A president sat for a magazine interview that the magazine published in full. A vice president spoke on camera. A trade adviser spoke into a microphone. And a former president, fifty-four years ago, recorded himself in the Oval Office, which turns out to be the transcript that still decides the most. The job this week is to find the sentence each claim was built on and read what sits on either side of it. In one case the sentence is exactly as ugly as advertised. In the other four, the sentence is real and the claim is a reading of it, and the reading is the part that traveled.

<a class="image-link image2 trannies”

The claim, everywhere from Wednesday night: the Secretary of War stood in front of several hundred officers at Quantico and said the military would have “no fatties, no trannies.” A fair number of readers took it for a paraphrase, a parody account, or a France 24 translation gone wrong, and a fair number of this publication’s readers asked whether it was real, because last week this publication could only trace it to a headline.

What happened when it was checked. It is real, and it is longer. The Rev transcript of the September 30 address, at the six-minute mark, has the secretary saying the department is “no longer the woke department or the weak department,” and then offering what he called a simple translation: “no fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals, just warriors.” The audience, by every account in the room, was silent. The same speech, per the Associated Press, directed every service to double the ten percent cut in general and admiral positions he ordered last spring, to twenty percent of roughly 800 slots, complete by January 1, 2027, and announced a study of the future of warfare led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich, due in 120 days. The “no fatties” line was the one that traveled. approved

The claim, from both directions at once. On the left, since Friday: the Supreme Court has cleared Trump to purge noncitizens from the voter rolls before the midterms. NBC’s headline said the Court allowed the administration to use the database “for potential voter purges,” and smaller outlets dropped the word potential. On the right, the same ruling ran as the Court “granting states the ability to verify voter status in the midterm election,” and the Department of Homeland Security put out a release applauding it.

What happened when it was checked. On Friday the Court issued an unsigned order pausing a June lower-court ruling that had blocked the expanded SAVE system, with Justice Jackson dissenting. That is a stay rather than a decision on the merits; the case continues on appeal. SAVE is the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, built to check eligibility for public benefits, which the administration expanded in 2025 so election officials could run entire voter rolls against it in bulk, including by Social Security number. What the ruling does is let DHS switch that back on while the litigation runs.

What it cannot do is produce a purge before November, because federal law already forbids one. The National Voter Registration Act bars systematic removal of voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election. The midterms are November 3. The 90-day window closed in early August. Officials can check an individual voter’s citizenship in that window, and they can queue up bulk results for later, but the mass removal both sides described cannot legally happen until after the polls close.

What was true underneath. The tool’s error rate, which is the part neither headline mentioned. ProPublica found the expanded SAVE system flagging citizens as noncitizens in at least five states. In Texas it flagged hundreds of people who had registered through the Department of Public Safety, which requires proof of citizenship to register in the first place. The ruling’s real effect lands in 2027 and 2028, when the quiet period lifts and states can act on bulk matches. That is when the false-positive rate becomes the whole story, and it is a better use of attention now than a purge that the calendar rules out.

Instagram, X, and TikTok since mid-September: truck drivers across the country will stop driving on October 1 to protest diesel prices, and shelves will be empty within days. Several of the videos tell viewers to stock up on six months of food.

What happened when it was checked. No union, trade group, or identifiable organizer has called a strike. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, which represents the independent truckers most likely to be squeezed, called it “social media chatter.” The Teamsters have said nothing to support it. Snopes looked on September 17 and found no evidence of any planned action. Several of the accounts pushing it are monetized, which is its own explanation.

What was true underneath. The price of diesel. The Energy Information Administration’s survey for the week of September 14 put the national average for on-highway diesel at $6.285 a gallon, a record, up 31.8 cents in a single week and up 68 percent from a year ago. The West Coast averaged $7.25, and California passed $8. Federal regulators have extended hours-of-service waivers through December 16 because fuel delivery itself is under strain. J.B. Hunt’s truckload division swung to an operating loss.

The strike is fiction, but the conditions that would make a strike plausible are documented in a federal data series. Nobody has to stockpile six months of food. People should expect the price of everything that rides on a truck to follow diesel, and nearly everything rides on a truck, and that will arrive without anyone walking off the job.

the Trump administration cut down sixty cherry blossom trees in Washington to build a golf course.

What happened when it was checked. The Washington Post reported that about sixty trees were removed from East Potomac Park, in what the Department of the Interior called routine maintenance. The Post article mentions one cherry tree. One. An advocacy group opposed to changes at the park told FactCheck.org it knew for certain of one cherry tree being cut, and no more.

What was true underneath. Sixty trees came down. The species that made it a story, the one that turns a maintenance crew into a desecration, is documented in exactly one case. The sixty is real. The cherry is a rounding error that happened to be the entire point. If you want to be angry about East Potomac Park, be angry about the fifty-nine trees nobody bothered to identify, because that’s the actual story and nobody told it.

Subscribe now

The map that proves the lake was always Lake America.

The claim, circulating on X, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Threads since the end of August, is that an old French map of the Great Lakes labels the water at the bottom of the chain “Lac America,” and that the president therefore restored an original name rather than inventing one. The most-shared version on X drew about 73,700 views and 3,700 likes, with a caption saying Trump was just correcting what it was called a very long time ago.

Michael Cohen interviewed Donald Trump on his radio show, and the framing across most of the coverage, sourced originally to Maggie Haberman on CNN, is that some people in the White House believe Cohen speaking out about the trial could be useful to the appeal.

I was going to repeat that. Then I looked at what the appeal actually is.

The live question is not whether Cohen told the truth. It is whether the case belongs in federal court under the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity decision. The Second Circuit revived that issue in November and sent it back to Judge Hellerstein, and the specific dispute on remand is whether prosecutors crossed a line by putting testimony from Hope Hicks and Madeleine Westerhout, both former White House aides, in front of the jury. That is the evidence that might qualify as official acts.

Cohen’s testimony was never part of that question. The payments were private conduct, which is the exact ground on which Hellerstein twice refused to move the case.

So a witness announcing that he felt pressured cannot touch it. It is not an argument the appeal contains.

Subscribe now

Most weeks I start research on something, find that the premise does not survive the evidence, and stop. That work does not appear anywhere. It just quietly does not become an article, and you have no way of knowing it happened.

I have come to think that is the wrong instinct. What gets rejected, and why, says more about whether you can trust the things that do run than any individual piece does. So from now on the ones that die get written up here.

There is a second reason, which is more useful to you. Most of what I kill dies because a claim circulating online turns out to be wrong, and those claims do not stop circulating just because I declined to repeat them. You are probably going to encounter them. You should know what is underneath them.

Three this time.
